Get Real! SEO is a Process of Constant Discovery
After years of designing and developing web sites for a myriad of small to medium businesses we often encounter the need to do SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) . Increasingly customers ask us to get their sites a TOP 10 in Google et al. This of course is not always easy !
As most clients don’t understand the technical side of building web sites they equally have little clue as to how even basic SEO works. So often their EXPECTATIONS of SEO / page ranking or search positioning are FAR TOO HIGH… certainly in the post web site launch stage.
A customer recently contacted me ONLY one day after we released his site complaining he couldn’t find the site listed in Google !!! Despite telling him it takes time and writing extensive release notes with hints and tips for better SEO.
SEO Inertia
What alarms us often is after spending a lot of time and money of the initial web site it’s then apparent that they lose interest and do nothing. They have no budget for future SEO. YEP, NOTHING. Many have a total lack of commitment to ensuring their web sites are continually monitored, tweaked and adapted to changing customer patterns, news, feedback and indeed technology. Most don’t often enough check their websites after launch, re-read them through, re-write periodically, update prices, add new products, inform their customers/prospects of company news. CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY !!!
YOUR COMPETITORS ARE DOING SEO BETTER THAN YOU.
THAT IS WHY THEIR WEB SITE IS TOP 10 of GOOGLE !
SEO is Ongoing – Don’t Stop Doing It !
Optimising and ‘tweaking’ a web site for better search engine positioning (ranking) is a constant discovery of what works and what doesn’t for YOUR PARTICULAR WEBSITE.
Whilst the multitude of SEO techniques can help you, there is no generic MAGIC BULLET to SEO for your site. Period. Your (and I mean YOUR) SEO Strategy needs to fit with your business goals and budget. It needs to be realistic for your product and service. It matches your thinking and re-thinking.
SEO Is Not ‘Off-The-Shelf’
Even when a customer asks us to do SEO they think we have a bullet-proof method. We don’t actually !! Because it has to be tailored to their business needs, thier budget and their customers. E.G. if they trade in a very difficult or competitive market then it gets harder. Harder means more time and effort = more cost. Make no mistake SEO is labour intensive.
So you can see that jostling for a constantly good search engine position is not an off-the-shelf formula or a one-off exercise.
You HAVE TO take account of any changing trends, your market, legal stuff, financial news, competitor strategy and your changing business goals. SEO is all part of your Marketing Mix. If it isn’t now it should be. You are losing out big-time.
So be flexible, get interested and learn SEO (at at least get a good understanding) and you’ll be through at least half the battle… of course the war carries on.
