Click Fraud! – On the rise
If you use ‘sponsored ads’ through Google Ads, Yahoo Search Marketing or similar, please be aware that Click Fraud is increasing year-on-year according to the Click Fraud Index. Q4 saw the index rise to it’s highest yet at 16.6%. That means for every 6 to 7 pay-per-click adverts, one is fraudulent which you are paying for!
We have been victim to Click Fraud which is usually competitors simply clicking on your Ad to increase your costs in hope that you don’t get the return on investment and then quit the PPC (pay-per-click) market leaving them to clear up.
Luckily both Google and Yahoo! have systems in place to monitor this and refund policoes if it proved that Click Fraud has happened. Plus if they pinpoint a competitor is doing this they can ban them from advertising… (although neither are full-proof systems).
We have used both Google and Yahoo! for sponsored ads (pay-per-click) and they are quite successful at getting traffic to your site. There’s a steep learning curve to do it properly but the investment can pay off. We’d recommend it but keep an eye on strange patterns of click activity in the On-line Admin’ system they provide – and report it as soon as you suspect anything!
